PERFORMANCE Crypt: July 8th, 2011, 7.30pm

A sound and movement improvisation event Sound: Nick Parkin and z?ev Movement: Marie-Gabrielle Rotie and Hollie Miller Christ Church Spitalfields, Commercial Street (the entrance to the crypt is on the corner of Fournier St and Commercial St) City of London E1 6LY (Liverpool Street Station)

Booking Audience capacity is limited so advance reservation is highly recommended (and cheaper). rotiemanager@me.com

Crypt takes place beneath Christ Church Spitalfields and brings together an experienced international artistic team, with highly physical and percussive sound improvisation by Nick Parkin and z'ev and movement by Marie-Gabrielle Rotie and Hollie Miller. This improvisation event marks the release of the album The Ascending Scale. See below for artist biographies. About The Ascending Scale Nick Parkin and z'ev share an interest in site-specific recordings and the atmospheric and acoustic character that different locations can bring to playing and recording. Their recent collaborative album The Ascending Scale was mainly recorded and inspired by the crypt beneath Christ Church, in Spitalfields, East London, an early 18th century Anglican church designed by architect Nicholas Hawksmoor, a controversial freemason known by some in his day as the 'devils architect'. The crypt is thickly atmospheric and alive with resonant acoustics, both of which were essential qualities in the playing and recording of a series of solos and duets by z'ev and Nick Parkin. The instruments resonated with the acoustic properties of the space and at times seeming to connect with the subterranean archaic history layered below. The tracks were inspired by both artists having a strong interest in Alchemical processes and Elemental sound, which manifested in the initial recordings in Spitalfields Crypt and in the final compositions relating to Elements of Three Alchemical Phases of the Swiss alchemist Paracelsus. ?The Ascending Scale? is presented by Soleilmoon Recordings in a hand-made screen-printed cover, in a limited edition of 350 copies.

Flower.Stone. Emptiness. Exploring a different theme on each of the three days, this workshop aims to encourage ?emptiness? through a connection to stillness, silence, internal space and movement from inner impulse. We will focus on body sensitivity training and use of imagery, developing a sense of our presence in time and space through 'the walking body'. Drawing upon the themes of flower, stone and emptiness, we will encounter the core philosophy of Butoh as initiated by Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. We will search for the place between, for the body abandoned to moving by not moving, to the body in search of itself. We will mainly explore ways of creating solo work and may also include some work outside in the nearby parks. This workshop is suitable for any level of experience and for those experienced with Butoh, it offers the opportunity to go deeper and benefit from guidance with two highly experienced teachers.

Tuesdays 7pm ? 9pm Part One: September 27th to October 25th cost = ?60 pounds

Part Two: November 1st ? November 29th cost = ?60 pounds

Bookings: rotieproductions@googlemail.com

In Part One we incorporate a lot of training and technique to develop a strong sense of line, inner connection, stillness, use of energy, attunement to centre of gravity and working from impulses and unconscious and spontaneous movement patterns. The warm- ups reflect classic Butoh training drawing upon water-sac, bones, impulses and hanging body. The second hour encourages movers to connect to movement from inside, to move from a deep connection to inner landscape and images and aims break down habitual movement patterns. In Part Two we will concentrate on solo and group creation working from both choreographic and improvisation methods and go deeper into the world of image, object and costume as means to enrich our movement languages and journeys. Students who attend the 10 weeks in full have the opportunity to present a performance as either solo or group at the end of the class series Marie-Gabrielle encourages movers to find their own way and deliberately avoids imposing her own ?style? or ?aesthetic?. Many students over the years have successfully gone on to develop their own distinct journey and movement practice.

Space-Dance is a form of New-Butoh and influenced by science and new concepts of space, explores the fluid, dissolving interface between body, space and architecture. Tetsuro’s workshops always generate a strong feeling of group connection and community and allow plenty of space for individual dance improvisation within a specific conceptual field.
What is Butoh? It is a step from within. It is self-realization though the body of the individual, direct, original dance technique. It is a recovery of the wild in mankind and a rebirth of the body intoxicated somehow lost in the contemporary world. It is an art which promotes us growth, and keeps the age-worthy flower blossoming continuously. Everybody can make their own Butoh as much as they receive their own body. What is a pleasure of our dance? It is a pleasure to change our feelings about our world at the moment. In this feelings we cann't find any differences between ourselves, we are connected to everyone and everywhere. So a dancer dance eternally to get its feelings. In Space Dance, the body is not a tool for expressing a story, the body is a story.
